What is Recreation Therapy?

Recreation Therapy, also known as Therapeutic Recreation (TR) is a client-centered health profession that uses recreation and leisure-based interventions to support individuals in achieving optimal well-being. It focuses on enhancing physical, cognitive, emotional, and social abilities, enabling individuals to enjoy meaningful leisure, function independently, and participate in their communities with confidence. As described by the Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (2022), TR enables individuals with various limitations to "acquire and/or maintain the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that allow them to enjoy their leisure optimally, function independently, and participate as fully as possible in society."

Through a strengths-based, evidence informed approach, recreation therapists and therapy assistants provide functional interventions, education, and recreational participation to meet the unique needs of individuals with illnesses or disabling conditions. These services are designed to enhance recovery, psychological and physical health, and overall well-being. (CTRA 2022; NCTRC 2022).

At BeYouRec, we provide inclusive services for people of all ages and abilities, including group, one-to-one, community, in-home, and in-facility sessions that promote physical and mental health. Referrals are accepted for personalized assessments aligned with person-centered goals. These assessments lead to evidence-based and evidence-informed treatments in the five key domains: Social, Cognitive, Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual.

We provide TR services to humans of all ages and abilities, including children, youth, adults and seniors in community, in-home, in-facility, group and one-to-one sessions.

I truly think that working with Mackenzie has changed my life forever. I gained skills that helped me both physically and mentally. Her encouraging, and positive spirit made me feel like my "disabilities" disappeared. I accomplished all of the goals that I didn't think were possible through her program. I was able to move without pain again and had the most fun doing it.

- BeYou Rec Client

I never thought a thing like painting and writing would help me out of my slump, because I'm not an artist by any means. But now, my outlook has completely changed, and it is going to be my new outlet forever. It has added a mindfulness to my busy head and purpose to my life, that I wouldn't have found otherwise.
